It has a target audience in mind, and stays true to its vision all the way through despite its setbacks (such as the main actor dying after season 1). It's pulpy and ridiculous and for that it is absolutely wonderful, but it also isn't meant for everyone. It never asks the viewer to take it too seriously. It never fails to just entertain, the plots stay compelling, you care about the characters, and it has surprising emotional depth all the way through to the amazing finale. The violence is over-the-top, the sex and nudity is gratuitous, the dialogue is exaggerated, the FX are ridiculous, the actors overly attractive. Spartacus is easily one of my favorite shows of all time and the biggest reason is because it's an exercise in excess.
